Partial solar eclipse over Hampstead Heath, north London, Wednesday 12 August 2026

The partially eclipsed sun over north London on the evening of Wednesday 12 August 2026, photographed from Hampstead Heath. Seven frames were shot on a Sony ILCE-7RM4 with a 70-200mm lens at its 200mm end, between 6.01pm and 7.18pm BST. The sequence opens on the full, uneclipsed disc at 6.01pm, then follows the moon biting into the right-hand edge of the sun, the disc thinning to a broad crescent and then to a narrow arc by 7.03pm. In the last two frames, at 7.12pm and 7.18pm, the crescent has turned over and is thickening again as the moon moves clear. The disc holds a deep orange against a black sky throughout, exposed at f/22 at 1/1000 for the first five frames and 1/400 for the final two, at ISO 50 on the opening frame and ISO 100 thereafter.
